Where the North Ends

Reading Where the North Ends is like wandering into a cabinet of curiosities whose curator is fascinated by New Mexico and its neighbors on both sides of the Mexican-US border. An imaginative work of fiction set mostly in New Mexico, Hugo Moreno’s novel is grounded in a deep knowledge of Apache, Hispanic, and mestizo practices as they have developed there since the seventeenth century.

Readers join Uriel/Diego on his shapeshifting and world-transforming adventure as he weathers—more successfully than most—the Inquisition and the harsh religious discipline of the colonizers’ frontier mission.

The subplots, which center on family intrigue and illicit transnational networks, are some of the most captivating in the book and could be productively spun off into future literary projects. In the meantime, though, readers who love the Spanish-language canon and who therefore see a bit of the narrator in themselves can enjoy uncovering a rich trove of literary allusions and navigating the worlds—real or imagined—of Where the North Ends.

Donde se acaba el Norte

Es una novela que atraviesa múltiples fronteras, épocas y espacios diferentes, incluso traspasa el umbral entre la vida y la muerte. Es también una épica de la búsqueda del héroe que remite a las sagas en pos del conocimiento, la luz y la verdad.

Donde se acaba el Norte es apta para estudiantes, profesores y públicos que aprecian el desafío intelectual y que responden al reto de acceder al conocimiento en sus múltiples formas. La novela se puede estudiar como una gesta épica, novela de crecimiento y aventuras; como texto de frontera que aborda temas políticos y sociales entre Estados Unidos y México, o como novela histórica de la conquista y colonización hispana.
